Seth Adair

Our kind, gentle, beautiful son, brother and friend, Seth Dean Adair, passed away at home on November 30, 2021. Seth was born on April 3, 1991, to Dean and Lisa Adair. He was the third of five children, always noted to be the most mellow and easiest to raise. It took very little to entertain Seth; he was always very content with his life and enjoyed watching and interacting with his siblings. Though he was quiet and shy in most company, Seth was very funny and full of laughter, smiles and frivolity when he found himself in a comfortable crowd.

Although often reserved, he was always very observant and learned quickly. He had great curiosity as a child and enjoyed exploring the world around him. He loved his elementary school years at the Open Classroom in Salt Lake City and was blessed with teachers who were sensitive to him and helped him find his footings in life. He also attended South Davis Junior High and graduated from Woods Cross High School in 2009. He enjoyed his band friends and playing the trumpet throughout junior high and high school. He began the welding program at Davis Technical College and was always excited to have a reason to pull out his small MIG welder to fix various items around the house and yard.

Seth had a variety of passions and hobbies, including gaming, watching old cartoons, Tim Burton movies, and anything in the sci-fi genre. He loved Halloween, building things out of Legos and K’NEX, collecting firearms, target shooting, airsofting with his buddies and expanding his collection of curiosities from his favorite store, Natur. His favorite toys were his 2003 Jeep Wrangler and his recently purchased 1969 VW Bug. He was a talented mechanic and loved to tinker with and accessorize his cars. He was an avid reader and loved sharing whatever new and interesting thing he was learning about with us around the dinner table. He was an artist at heart, and had an array of talents from sketching, to welding sculptures, to smoking homemade jerky on his Trager and pickling his own homegrown cucumbers. Seth also loved animals, and his gentle nature made him a magnet for all the family dogs over the years.

Seth thrived in the natural world and loved spending time in and around the mountains and lakes of Utah. He was a true adventurer and considered getting into precarious situations while 4-wheeling a good time. Fishing and hunting were among his favorite pastimes, and he loved camping with his family and friends from the Open Classroom. Perhaps most beloved were the yearly “sibling campouts” that he enjoyed with just his brothers and sister, where shenanigans and laughter abounded.

Seth was a hard worker and had many jobs over the years. Most recently, he worked for BD Medical and found great support in his coworkers there.

Our precious Seth suffered with severe anxiety and depression for much of his life. He fiercely fought against the demons that never ceased to extinguish the joy of life that he so desperately sought. Seth knew and understood joy, because like darkness and pain, it had been something that he had experienced throughout his journey on Earth. It was the disparity between the joy and the pain that began to sever his heart and soul in an irreversible way, and he developed a severe alcohol addiction as he tried to cope with his internal struggles. Though he moved out of the house on his own when he was 18, he moved back home in March of 2020. We will never be able to express what a delight it was to have him live with us this past year and a half, despite the emotional turmoil of living with his addiction, and we thank our Father in Heaven for the gift of this precious time with Seth in our every prayer. While at home, he bravely decided to seek treatment for his addiction and went through a detox program in March 2021. It was an agonizing journey for all of us, but we were blessed to have a sober Seth from June to September of this year, and we savored the wonderful glimpses we had of the man we love so dearly during this time. Sadly, the pain inside him was too profound and he relapsed in October 2021. Even so, he courageously fought to the end against the anxiety and depression that would ultimately take his life. In his final weeks as the mental illness took over, Seth frequently expressed gratitude for the blessing of having a family that loved him without reservation, and we do love him, so very much. Our Seth was so kind and was always the champion for the underdog, the deprived or the unfairly treated. He was a gentleman, a good listener, and a true friend to those willing to see him through the sometimes-clouded haze of his struggles.

Seth was greeted in heaven by his grandfather (Ronald Watts) and aunt (Teresa Watts). He leaves behind his parents, his brothers, Nathan, Miles (Elizabeth), and Colton (Samantha), sister Bethany (Brandon) Quinn, three nephews, four nieces and a large extended family. Seth has left us with broken hearts, yearning to have more time, but also with the comfort of knowing that he is finally at peace.

We are grateful for the help and support that Seth received from BD Medical, for the friends and counselors who cared for him at Salt Lake Behavioral Health, and for all his loyal friends who never stopped reaching out to him. We also want to express gratitude to all our friends and neighbors in the Orchard Second Ward who lovingly taught and guided Seth throughout Primary, Scouts and Young Men’s, and for Seth’s grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who filled the days, months, and years of Seth’s life with love.

Seth, we love you! We miss you! Please know that we will each hold you tightly, safely, devotedly in our hearts until we are able to embrace you once again.
