Renard “Rey” John Thompson, 61, of West Valley City, Utah, passed away on August 17,
2023, at his home following a courageously fought battle with metastatic esophageal
cancer. Rey’s loving wife, Marlene Thompson, was by his side throughout his battle and was
with him as he returned to live with his Father in Heaven.
Renard was born December 19, 1961, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Roland and Sylvia Thompson.
He was the oldest of four children. At the age of 2, the family relocated to Idaho Falls, Idaho
and then later to Woodville, Idaho. Renard attended school in Shelley, Idaho. Upon
graduating from high school, he attended Ricks College and later graduated from Brigham
Young University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communications-Human Resource
Development. Renard served an 18-month LDS mission in Bogota, Columbia (March 1981-
October 1982).
For the past 31 years, Renard was employed by the State of Utah Division of Emergency
Management. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
and served in many callings; his most loved being a temple worker in the Jordan River
Temple. Renard dedicated his life to serving others.
Renard had a love of sailing, cooking, music, literature, snow skiing, and travel. Anyone
who knows Renard knows that he also loved plants, singing, and spending time with his
son, RJ Thompson.
On January 14, 2022, Renard married his eternal companion and love, Marlene Thompson
in the Jordan River Temple.
Renard is survived by his wife, Marlene, children, Rowynn John (RJ) and ShayLeilani of
West Jordan, Sisters, Lisa Clark of Pocatello, ID, and Michelle (Tom) Tueller of Shelley, ID,
Brother, Mark H (Rhonda) Thompson of Idaho Falls, ID and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Roland and Sylvia Thompson, grandparents Harry
and Lucille Thompson and Hallace and LaVerne Harker.
A memorial service will be held for Renard on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 11:00 am
at the Constitution Ward Building at 2850 W 3835 S. West Valley City, UT. The family will
meet with friends and family members from 10:00 to 10:45 am prior to the service.
