Our dearest mother and grandmother, Lois Stagg Hodgson, passed away on September 21, 2024, two months shy of celebrating her 39th birthday for the 60th time. We thank her son, Scott, for making it possible for her to stay in her home of 74 years, by caring for her as she suffered the debilitating effects of dementia for many years.
Lois was born on November 24, 1925, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to James Stagg and Florence Hilton, and became the little sister to four brothers, Wayne, James, Jack, and Lester, who all predeceased her. Lois married Marco Gabardi Hodgson (1923-1979), and they welcomed three adopted sons into their home, Marco Scott, Cameron Ray (1958-2021), and Alan Russel. They later divorced. Lois adored her three sons and worked hard as a single parent, in and out of her home, to provide opportunities for them to succeed. She loved learning, and though she was only able to attend college for a year, she continued to learn and teach through her employment as a substitute teacher, the secretary to the Utah Board of Education, and as a defensive driving instructor. She also read many books. She was so proud to have each of her three sons and her four grandchildren graduate from college.
Lois had many friends with whom she had monthly dinner groups, traveled the world, visited, helped, and who helped her. Lois had faith in Jesus Christ, and as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, some of her friendships grew as she attended church, served in callings and served in the Bountiful Temple. Other friends came to serve her as they brought the sacrament each week and brought sunshine into her home when they visited.
We mourn the loss we feel at the passing of our wonderful, sweet mother and grandmother, but we rejoice in all she gave us in this life. Through the years we have enjoyed the blessing of her great love, her amazingly tasty food and recipes, her incredibly quick wit, her beautiful smile and laugh, her sense of fashion, the birthday parties she planned, presents, her presence at our important events, the color pink, flowers, her sweet tooth leading her to declare that “meeces” got into the ice cream in the freezer, her encouragement and praise, and her celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Lois is survived by two sons, Marco Scott Hodgson and Alan Russel Hodgson (Kia); four grandchildren, Kyler (Alisha), Keeton, Kase, and Kearsa (Kaden Rawson); and two great-grandchildren, Hallie and Dane. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, whom she loved.
We thank her long-time friends, and her nurse, Allison, and all those who cared for and helped Lois from Symbii Home Health and Hospice, as she neared the end of her life.
