It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leslie Plowgian Schwendiman, who tragically left this world on September 20th, 2024, after being struck by a car while walking with her fiancé, Steve. They were on a walk, one of her favorite activities, on a beautiful sunny day.
Born on February 9, 1971, to Larry and Nancy Plowgian, Leslie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, whose warmth and love touched the lives of everyone she met.
Leslie’s younger years were spent playing piano, babysitting her siblings, water skiing in Lake Powell, hanging out with the “Savvy Seven,” and spreading her happiness everywhere she went. She attended Weber State College, where she enjoyed being silly with her friends more than her studies. She did, however, graduate with her degree in Communications.
Her deep faith guided her throughout her life. After college, from 1995-1996 Leslie served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Budapest, Hungary. Her testimony and love for Christ taught her to live her life led by the principles of love, service, and family. She served in many church callings where music played a significant role. She was a gifted pianist and a powerful teacher, whose testimony showed in all that she did. On May 9th, 1997, Leslie married Scott Schwendiman, and together they had 5 children.
Leslie's five children and her daughter-in-law were her pride and joy. She cherished every moment spent with them, especially her beloved grandson, Jace, who brought immense light into her life. Leslie was always her children’s biggest cheerleader, fiercely supporting them in all their endeavors. She spent countless hours waking up early to teach them piano. She attended every pickleball tournament for her son, Thatcher, and cheered on Walker at his Westminster soccer games—where he and the entire team adored her presence. She took great joy in sharing special moments with her daughter, Sophie, who styled her hair and lashes. Her favorite part of the week was her weekly calls with her son Sam, who is serving a mission in Fiji. Prior to his mission, Leslie loved supporting Sam in all his soccer games. Over the past two years, she had the unique opportunity to work alongside her son, Jason, in his business– a chance she treasured deeply and appreciated with all her heart. Leslie enjoyed spending time with her favorite daughter-in-law, Brooke, and grandson, Jace. She spent every Thursday with Jace for grandma day. He never wanted to leave her. Leslie found immeasurable happiness, becoming the most loving “Mimi.”
Leslie brought joy and light wherever she went. Even in the face of adversity, her spirit shone brightly. In July of 2022 she experienced a tough divorce which taught all those around her how to face hard things. She was able to maintain her “choose happy” attitude amid heartbreak and to continue to lean on the Savior for strength. A life lesson her children will now implement.
A year ago, Leslie met the love of her life, Steve Olsen. They were engaged to marry this coming December, and her happiness with him was undeniable. Steve embraced Leslie’s children, and they joyfully looked forward to combining their families into one supportive unit.
Leslie was a mother to many beyond her biological children, opening her heart and home to those in need. Numerous young people have found a second family in her, thanks to her generosity and compassion.
Leslie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness. She impacted everyone she encountered, and her gorgeous green eyes, radiant smile and contagious laugh will be forever missed. She embodied the belief that families are eternal and dedicated herself to living in a way that would bring her closer to them in the next life.
Leslie's absence leaves a profound void, but her teachings, laughter, and love will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her family and friends will carry her memory with them, forever honoring the remarkable woman Leslie was.
Leslie is survived by her children Jason (Brooke), Thatcher, Walker, Sophie, and Sam. Her grandson Jace. Her parents, Larry and Nancy Plowgian and her siblings, Rob (Angie) Plowgian, Jeff (Tara) Plowgian, Shannon Plowgian Stobbe, Kristin Plowgian (Zach) Nelson and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her fiancé, Steve Olsen, his five children and too many friends to count.
