JoAnn Hawkins

May 6, 1929 — February 15, 2020

Our loving mother JoAnn McAllister Hawkins passed happily and peacefully on February 15, 2020 in Bountiful, UT from this life to those waiting on the other side of eternity. JoAnn was the first born of Richard Bernell and LuZene Wilkinson McAllister on May 6, 1929 in Kanab, UT. She married Dale R Hawkins in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on August 30, 1950.

JoAnn was an exceptional mother, spouse, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and mentor. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many organizations and callings. Mom was never afraid to share her testimony and her love of the Savior with any and all she met.

Mom received her AS degree from Dixie college and BS degree in Education from the University of Utah.  She taught Elementary School for eight years, making a positive impact on many people. She taught us to “leave the world a better place than you found it”, “always keep your covenants”, “tie a knot in your rope and hang on” and “be a better man than I was”.

Mother’s family was important to her, as were her ancestors. She thoroughly enjoyed her association with many friends in the community, the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, and in particular the members of the Kaysville 4 th Ward. Mom excelled at home-making arts and willingly shared all her knowledge and trade secrets. She was famous in the neighborhood for her fresh hot whole wheat bread with jam and her soft gingerbread molasses cookies. She taught 4H classes in cooking, sewing, gardening and animal care. She helped her husband, Dale, build three beautiful homes: one in Heber City and two on 700 East in Kaysville.

She loved her calling as organist at the Bountiful Temple and accompanied many of her children and others on the piano. She also played violin with the City Symphony Orchestra of New York and the Davis County Celebration Orchestra. She taught piano, violin, and organ to anyone who would sit down long enough for a lesson.

She is survived by four brothers Richard B.(Kathryn d.) McAllister, Patrick (MaryLou) McAllister, Robin (Sharon d.) McAllister, and Karl (Margaret d.) McAllister and nine children Melodee (J.R.) Westmoreland, Dale (Tami) Hawkins, Sharon (Loren) Simnitt, Mary (Mike) Hammon, Carolyn (Rick) Scheese, Rebecca (Rich) Bond, Joseph (Julie) Hawkins, Elaine (Matt) Smith, and Sylvia (David) Panter.

47 grandchildren and 39 great- grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her husband, Dale, an infant sister Annie, infant brother Paul Kim, her parents, two adult sisters LuZene McAllister and Marilyn Sehlmeier, and brother in-laws and sister in-laws on both the Hawkins and McAllister sides.

The family appreciates the tender loving care shown by Waikoloa Assisted Living in Bountiful, Utah Home Health and Hospice, and all family and friends who pitched in to help Mom throughout the years.
