David Gordon Reed was born November 17, 1967, in Ogden, Utah. He died March 23, 2024, in Sandy, Utah. His parents were Robert David and Mary Kathryn Ryan Reed. He grew up in Syracuse, Utah and Littleton, Colorado. He graduated from Clearfield High School and the University of Utah.
David was a gifted child, showing artistic talent from the time he was a toddler. With the help of his sister Ellen, he learned all the state capitals by second grade and mastered spelling tests. He taught himself computer programming as a teenager when home computers were new technology, and he was able to make programming his career without any formal training.
David was an artist and philosopher. He painted a trove of works and gifted his amazing artwork to family and friends. He was a voracious reader of books on history and politics and stayed engaged with America’s political landscape. He earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree from the University of Utah and returned later to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
David loved science fiction, quoting movies, and was a great storyteller. He participated in a writing group and enjoyed sharing his work with them. He loved to play trivia games and waged legendary battles of Trivial Pursuit with his sister Ellen. He cheered for the Broncos with his sister Susan and watched NASCAR with his lifelong friend Jeff Stowell. He was most at peace in the hammock at the family home, surrounded by pets in a yard that kept the busy world at bay. He was accompanied through life by many loving animals that were close to his heart.
David lost his father at an early age and missed him always. He was a loving father to his own son Lukas and kept his dad’s memory alive through stories he shared with Lukas.
He was witty and curious and was still finding new interests and talents until the end of his life - recently discovering that he enjoyed the ukelele. He played the guitar and would share a little song at the end of phone calls and to celebrate birthdays.
David was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his son Lukas and his sisters Ellen, Susan and Heather.
